With an aquarium, you can simply lay them out on the base of the sand or gravel to help to give the aquarium the look of fast-moving water (any sucker-mouth type fish and snails will graze and rest on them) or carefully pile them up to create hiding and places of safety for small or juvenile fish and invertebrates.

In terrariums and vivariums, you could combine them with sand or different sized gravels to create a beach scene and provide an area for inhabits to get out of the water to rest and bask.

In a pond you can use them to create a beach area to help frogs and other amphibians to get out of the water. They can also be used for top-dressing planting baskets to discourage fish from digging up plants or clouding up the water.

For water features, they be used either for decorating (self-contained water features) or helping to blend a waterfall or water course into the landscape.
